Don't Move I Move
Helen Burrows and Christoph Grothgar
Tapestry Gallery 51-52 Frith Street
London W1 5 - 31 January 2006
Helen's photographs of dancers were taken durning rehersals at the Royal Ballet. She uses slow shutter speeds to explore the shapes the dancers make in space. Their swift movements are suggested by the streaks of colour from the dancers' clothes which trail out like ribbons or the blurred traces of speeding headlights in the night. The human form seems to have been melted or contorted, but Helen brings a stillness to the images that contrasts with the ballerinas' activity, capturing a suspended moment.
In 'Stateless 4' two figures intertwine in what could be an embrace. Their forms merge into an abstract mass, with only a hand, an elbow, a possible knee, discernable. Helen explores the delicate elegance of dance as well as the strength and stamina dancing requires. She contrasts physical discipline with a sense of definance in which the human body seems to spill out of its own boundaries.
